ProNano – in its VII version – emerges as an example of nanoscience and nanotechnology education for high school teachers, and since the inclusion of these contents in education, these tutorials have emerged to support them by giving them the knowledge and tools that enable them to deal effectively with their students. Science programs for third and fourth graders and require greater depth.
Teachers from around the country, its director, National Award for Exact Sciences, Dr. He participated in a talk cycle presented by researchers from the Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, including Dora Altbir Drullinsky.
On this occasion, he pointed out:This workshop enables us to realize our aim as a science center, which is to do science and technology, to train scientists in these fields, to contribute to the training of teachers and students, and to contribute to the development of the country. For this, new generations must understand that these developments affect different fields such as medicine, food, climate change and mining.”
Later, the professors visited different laboratories in Chile to learn directly how nanoscience works, and even participated in some experiments and developments with researchers from different fields (nanoparticle manufacturing, nanomedicine, nanosecurity, nanotechnology packaging production, microscopy electronics, etc.).
A joint effort was made with the Ministry of Science, Technology, Information and Innovation and the City of Santiago’s Explora Program to run ProNano 2022 this year.
In this context, Sonia Pérez, Head of Science and Society Department of the said portfolio, pointed out that this workshop is the result of an articulation and collaborative network necessary for new generations to develop their science and technology skills. Does Chile need it?
Rodrigo Roco, person in charge of the Santiago Municipal Directorate of Education, said: “The main value for teachers participating in this activity is the recognition of their educational work. In this case, they are carriers of scientific thought and the tools that science has, but they also bring that frontier knowledge, which is nanoscience and nanotechnology”.
On this occasion, Science teacher Thiare Santana presented a pedagogical proposal to those present for the teaching of scientific subjects based on STEAM and PBL. The aim is for the student community to solve a problem in society, create a product outline with nanoparticles and/or nanomaterials, and connect with the students’ world in a fun and educational way through classes and guides.
Second Nanoscience Education Workshop
In parallel with this event, Usach and Cedenna Department of Physics launched the Second Workshop on Educational Principles in Nanoscience for seventh to fourth grade science and mathematics teachers in asynchronous online mode. An activity that contributes to teacher education like ProNano.
Cedenna is the largest research center in the field in our country with over 70 researchers from different universities and disciplines. It has capacities available in more than 20 state-of-the-art laboratories and the only nanosecurity laboratory in the country.
